Great question Dallas, and I suggest you ask it on Khan Academy itself here! I know of several science-savvy users who might have an answer. ;)

If you're at such a great distance from the star that the star's light hasn't had time to reach you since it formed, then yes, you would not see it :]

If you wait long enough you will be able, at least in principle, to detect the electromagnetic radiation that emanated from the star long ago.  This is assuming you have the appropriate equipment for detection (stars emit radiation in various wavelengths; there may be objects between the star and your line of sight that obscure some radiation, like dark nebulae, in which case infrared- or radio wave-sensitive instruments would be ideal; and the universe's expansion tends to stretch those wavelengths if the light originates from a star many millions to billions of light-years away).
