Bring back the Knowledge Map
Can you bring back the Knowledge Map please? I really miss it!
As part of our Support Community improvement project, we’re preserving inactive posts that have historical or community value and closing them to new comments. This is one of them!
If this post covers a topic that you’re interested in discussing with the community or requests a feature you’d like to see on Khan Academy, you can try to find an active post about it and add your thoughts (or feel free or create a new post if it doesn’t yet exist in the forum).
I'm not sure what the Khan team's plans are, but here's a link back to that knowledge map!

It doesn't work anymore, it just crashes the browser (Firefox, Chrome) or the map doesn't appear at all (Edge) or the page doesn't even finish loading (IE). Considering this was one of the standout features that put KA on the map, it's pretty crazy how they've just abandoned the data visualization part of their math program. They need to create something that works and isn't tied into Google maps for seemingly no reason. I wouldn't hold my breath though, as it appears it has been abandoned for 5 years. At least let us download the data or provide some kind of sdk so someone can make a working visualizer.
I really miss the knowledge map. I think that was a key thing to make me fall in love with math again, that in combination with Sal's videos deeply contributed to me soon being a software engineer - currently working towards my master's.
Kae Would be great if we at least could contribute to creating a visualizer, I would be down for that.
Tried to see if there was a way to do this, I didn't find a way to contribute trough open source but I did find an API through which this might be possible https://github.com/Khan/khan-api/wiki/Khan-Academy-API. Sadly that is going to be deprecated by July 1 2020..
Unfortunately, I didn't see your reply notification until yesterday. Someone else had also commented that they would be developing a knowledge tree and implied they had data to work with, but it appears that reply has been deleted.
It looks like they really went through with their plans to discontinue the skill-tree API among others. Where does this leave us? There hasn't been an official response and it's been over 3 years.
If anyone else is currently working on this or knows how to get the necessary data, please let me know.
I would like to at least have the Knowledge Map as a PDF to use as a resource in my lesson planning. If anyone has an image of the entire tree that they would be willing to share, I would be quite grateful.
I've decided to make a math knowledge map which links to KA modules, but I won't have time to work on it until next month. If I can make it work, I'll let you know. I may try to make a version in p5 and publish it as a program on KA. I think I could make a basic version similar to the old one fairly quickly, but I'm not sure if it will happen before September. I can see a few points of hidden complexity in making it work and certainly some feature limitations compared to the original. I'm not sure a PDF would be a good way to represent the data.... there's a lot of nodes.
i can't wait to see what you guys come up with ! did you archive the knowledge map in any way ?
I found the last working instance of the knowledge map on the Wayback Machine (archive.org): https://web.archive.org/web/20190716002958/https://www.khanacademy.org/exercisedashboard
Unfortunately, since the Google Maps API no longer works, the page loads extremely slowly.
I extracted the data and organized it in Excel. However, the data is about a year old and there have been new concepts added and removed since then, but the general flow of concepts is still the same.
Im planning to remake it using the khan academy data as a reference but not strictly as it was.
If you do figure out how to re-code the map please let us know!
The knowledge map would be SO helpful for homeschooling. I want it back!
Where is the knowledge map?
How do I let students choose their topics? I don't want to assign much.
The knowledge map was removed as a feature because it used the Google Maps API, which is no longer supported. I'm currently working on a more refined version in HTML and JavaScript. I intend to publish it as a website of it's own, where each concept will have links to khan academy, wikipedia, youtube and wolfram mathworld. Anyone who would like to help, please message me.
A related topic label is "World of Math" --
Please see my comment today seeking collaborators for an effort to revive these great features:
MB Can you please share the excel with me or put it some place public?
I can't figure out how to message you personally. Thanks!
@yathish.dhavala im remaking it in this program:
https://metacademy.org/graphs/edit/e977ieag
the data is in a google sheet here: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1YiRwrDAuLx7K2NmPySs1K1GpR7Kxzfk5KjDTxpvP0rM/edit#gid=1973721278
its not fully sorted but the data is all there.
@Richard Friberg I would still like to make a working version of the knowledge map in more detail with the most updated data set. Do you know python? if so, see my previous comment. The metacademy web app is amazing but needs some tweaks.
