Determining the use of a trig function

If you have a right- angled triangle then it depends on what information is given and what you need to find.

Here are the basic formulas:

(*where x is equal to any random angle:)

sinX*= perpendicular of the triangle divided by hypotenuse of the triangle

cosX*= base of the triangle divided by hypotenuse of the triangle

tanX *= perpendicular of the triangle divided by base of the triangle.

Where:

• the hypotenuse is the side opposite to the right angle
• the base is the side in between the right angle and the angle X
• and the perpendicular is the side opposite to the angle X.

If the triangle you have is not a right angled triangle then use the formula:

sinX divided by side Y = sinA divided by side B,

where angle X is opposite to side Y and angle A is opposite to side B

all the values used correspond to a single triangle, alone.
