Wow, good job on the badges Light Runner! I don't know if the Khan Academy staff will accept these, but I'll drop a link to this post so they see it, at least.

The badges look amazing, nice job. ;)

I love them! I should probably post my Black Hole designs.

Wow, the look great! I like the ones for the new unit mastery system the most - I think that as KA grows, it's badges should grow alongside too.

Excellent designs!

Wow! I like these designs! May I ask, which program did you use to make these designs?

Thank you Nicholas! I actually just programmed these on Khan Academy. Since I used to program various graphics using JS, I found it easier to just use what I was already familiar with.

The actual badges you see across KA are made using Illustrator and Sketch, in case you wanted to try your hand at professionally making some icons yourself :)

I have an idea. For the Unit Mastery badges, maybe we could make it so that you need a certain level of mastery in multiple skills, say 5 or 10. That would reduce the number of these badges greatly and make it more fun to earn.

Good idea Red Apple! I was thinking about something similar. An example would be Kindergarten. The Kindergarten section has 3 "mini-sections"; Counting and place value, Addition and Subtraction, and Measurement and geometry. Maybe Sage, the highest unit mastery badge would be awarded once you achieved 100% in all three units? That way you would only get one set of badges instead of three sets.

The only problem would come with bigger sections. Statistics and Probability is a good example of that. Since it has 16 "mini-sections" you'd have to do 5 times the work to earn the same set of badges.

We'd have to see how they would approach this if they ever plan to implement the badges. Again, good suggestion :)

I find the unit mastery badge system suggestion interesting, but I also find the potential number of badges much too high. Instead, I suggest implementing a subject leveling system. Each subject page would have a side bar with:

• Past achieved: colored but slightly greyed-out

• Current: colored with a bit of light shining from behind

KA could then add to the user profile a Subject Mastery pod, which would display the user's level for all started subjects among other related items (such as the total mastery achieved, helpful for gauging the distance to many badges).

Nice idea JavaLava! That's one way to fix the amount of badges that could possibly be earned by the Unit Mastery system. I'm a visual person so I quickly threw together some concepts of what your suggestion could look like.

The sidebar you said could look something like this. You just have to adjust the padding and dimensions of the "100% Unit Mastery" and add in the badge icons:

The user profile widget could have a similar look to either the badge counts or the showcase:

It could, as you suggest, show the amount of mastery in subjects that you have. (Along with the lower levels of mastery)

Great idea! Thanks for sharing it :)

I finally understood the unit mastery system! Yay! Now the thing about earning too many sets of badges. You could easily earn a whole lot of badges from that as there can be many sections, and many grades and other math subjects, ugh. So, what if a new badge category was added and the category is unit mastery badges??  There can be level 1: apprentice and explorer level 2: pioneer and adventurer level 3: sage I'm lazy and don't want to go through each math grade and subject counting how many badges you can earn from all that. I think it's best to leave everything to the KA team. They will decide what is best to do.

I just counted and there are 408 possible sections to get each 5 badges so 408 sections * 5 badges each section = 2,040 badges. So, instead of that, I was thinking something along the lines of the above graphic. Possibly once you get all your skills above Apprentice level, you get the Apprentice badge. That way you're only awarded one of each badge.

So, for example, these could be the requirements:

Apprentice: Take your first unit mastery test (or something like that)

Explorer: Achieve the level Explorer and above in all sections

Pioneer: Achieve the level Pioneer and above in all sections

Sage: Achieve Sage in all sections

That way you have to get 100% in all the sections in order to get the Sage badge. Yes it's harder to achieve, but I think that getting 5 badges is better than getting 2,040 extra badges. That might mean we'd have to bump up the levels of the badges (Like moving Sage up to a sun badge) but I don't think that'd be a problem. Anyways, you're right. If KA decides to implement these badges, I'm sure they'll be able to figure out the best way possible to award them.

Nice work, but maybe try to provide svg files? They can't just upload these with the press of a button if they aren't svg.

Here's my idea for a new badge. Archimedes is for earning 5,000,000 energy points. I hope they accept it!
