Subscription Pages and Advertising: Pros and Cons
Introduction
I do agree with the portion that sub pages are in a way vote soliciting. They seem to get the "popular" people up the hot list. But without sub pages, I imagine a hot list just crashing. There are so many people eager to get on the hot list, but with all these "popular" users, they can't seem to get up there. For me, I find myself in the middle of "popular" and "just not seen". Why are people not seen? Because of sub pages.
What would happen without sub pages?
People may get a better opportunity on the hot list. When their program is released, it will pop up on the hot list, someone will vote it up, it flies up to the top. The sub pages aren't needed. But really? What will happen to the "popular" people? Nothing, really. People just don't bother to look at other's programs unless it looks "cool". If they see "Chester Banks" or "Legolas Greenleaf", they won't care what it is. They will open it and vote inadvertently. They will think it is "funny" and just you know, worth the vote. But it isn't. So getting rid of sub pages obviously isn't the right solution.
What would happen with sub pages?
People who are popular will probably over-dominate the hot list either way so sub pages may be the right way to do it. But, that will cause people to leave KACP from frustration of not getting their good programs on the hot list.
Solutions
The hot list is a creative idea, but I think it should be either scratched or not be the main list to look at. After looking over other major approaches from #Revive and other programs on KA, a rating system might be ideal. When they press on the vote button, it will go hot. Popular people are meant to be hot. But when they click on the button, they will ask for a rating. The rating will be an great idea.
The problem though is that less "popular" people will get less ratings possibly resulting in a more or less rating, The solution to this is not clear to me yet, but I hope the community has some idea. :)
