[Official Post] Teachers unable to coach existing student accounts
As more people have started setting up and returning to their classrooms, we've received a lot of questions and concerns from teachers who are not able to connect existing student accounts (younger than 13) to their classes. This is occurring when those accounts are not connected to parents, or when the parent account has not enabled the "add other coaches" setting on the child's account. This impacts teachers regardless of the way that they are rostering their classes.
We know this is a frustrating experience for many of you, and the classroom team wants to address this ASAP, so they are in the process of building a scalable product solution. The experience that teachers will have after this is rolled out is that previously-created student accounts that do not have a parent attached will all have the "add other coaches" setting enabled, so that teachers will be able to add them to their classes. Note that child accounts that do have parents attached will still need their parent to enable this setting.
We don't have a specific timeline to share on this, other to say that it is a top priority, so I'm creating this post as a central resource to keep everyone updated, so that you can be notified of updates as I get them. In order to prevent extra notifications, I'm closing this post for additional comments, but we're happy to foster conversations about this in other forum threads.
**There are also some other edge cases impacting Google Classroom rostering and restricted domains right now, and those are being addressed separately.
