Khan Academy: the best game ever!!! :)
I'm 52 and have wanted to brush up on my math skills for many years. When I originally found Khan Academy a couple of years ago I thought it was just for kids and I left.
About a month ago I returned and took another look, learning that the math area is actually quite vast and could certainly help me if the format was ok.
All it took was a couple of practice sessions to learn that a) I loved the format and b) the challenge vs reward ratio was instantly addicting.
Missions + achievements (badges) created a drive towards completion and turned me into a junkie!
Best of all, math is now my very favorite game! This is a subject that was often the bane of my existence as a kid. I cannot tell you how many times I fought against various topics. "I will NEVER EVER USE this information! WHY DO I HAVE TO DO THIS?!!" Now it's all a game to me! Thousands of challenging puzzles that make me smarter and add a twinkle to my mind. I am able to do math in my head faster and easier than I have in years. I am understanding topics that evaded me in my youth. Although I did find the fun in math that I learned when I was younger, I was happy when it was behind me and really didn't want to pursue any more of it after school.
It is my hope to complete all of the math missions as the months pass by. I have the Arithmetic mission under my belt, and the simple grades of K-5 were a wiz. The challenges really started kicking me in the teeth with percentage problems, types of geometry and pre-algebra concepts in the 6th grade mission, but I finally finished that mission yesterday! I am 30% through 7th and 10% into 8th, and every practice session leaves me wanting more!
Khan Academy is making me reach for goals that seemed laughable in the past. I am going to try to get through High School math and then do the unthinkable: Calculus and Trig! For the first time in my life, I have a real way to work towards this seemingly impossible dream. Khan has given me the tools and the encouragement to work towards this goal. Thanks to Sal and the team, I am learning slowly and surely and it's ignited a passion inside me that I never knew I had!!
