Update: New way for skills to count as "Practiced"
New update for practicing material on Khan Academy!
Earlier today we rolled out a new exercise mechanic where we ask students to 'Do-N' items in order to complete an exercise. Previously, most exercises would ask student to get 'N in a row' problems correct in order to be considered 'practiced.'
This goal of this update is to improve student experience around our practice mechanics by making them more encouraging and forgiving, which is a request we've heard from many teachers, parents, and learners over the years. We also hope that this update will reinforce students' growth mindset by showing them that even if they don't correctly answer N-in-a-row the first time, they've worked hard and are moving in the direction of deepening their understanding of the material.
We've been gradually rolling this out to some users over the past few weeks, so you might have already started noticing it. But as of this afternoon, this should be out to the entire Khan Academy community!
Now, learners will need to answer >70% of the N problems correct in order to be considered ‘practiced’ in the exercise. Previously, learners that answered 'N in a row' correctly were considered ‘practiced’. (We're exploring the possibility of making the current 70% practiced threshold adjustable by coaches who assign the content to their students.)
The ‘practiced’ state determines the color we show to indicate progress through a topic, as well as the set of problems that are available for learners in Mastery Challenges. Note that we haven’t changed how ‘practiced’ exercises are shown, just how learners earn ‘practiced’ status.
Note: this change is only for exercises which have not yet been practiced. Mastery advancements (Practiced -> Level 1, etc) will not be changing from the current requirements.
What do you think of this change? As always, the team really values hearing your thoughts on this update.
