How do I review, assign, and edit my students' Learning Path placements?
Where can I find Learning Path recommendations?
After students complete a Khan Academy Interim Assessment, their scores are used to generate recommended Learning Path placements.
You'll find these recommendations on the Placements tab in your classroom navigation.
The Placements tab appears automatically for district classrooms connected to a supported assessment. If no students have taken the assessment yet, you'll see an empty state until scores are available.
How do I assign Learning Path placements?
When new recommendations are available, you have two options:
Option 1: Assign all recommended placements (auto-assign)
Use Update all to accept the recommended placements for every student across every strand at once. This is the fastest way to assign Learning Paths to an entire class.
Important: Update all applies to the whole class at once, and there is no confirmation step. Make sure you're ready to assign all recommended placements before selecting this option.
Option 2: Review and assign
Use Review and assign to review each student and strand individually. You can approve the recommended placements or adjust them before assigning them to students.
Review and assign is the default option and is useful when you want to adjust specific recommendations before assigning them.
Can I preview Learning Path content before assigning it?
Yes. Before approving a placement, you can preview the content the student will work on.
Select a recommended placement to open the Unit Mission Preview screen. From there, you can review the exercises, videos, and articles included in the placement.
How do I edit a student's placement?
After assigning a placement, you can move a student to a different level at any time.
For example, if you think a student's recommended placement is too easy or too challenging, you can adjust their score band from the Placements grid.
When you move a student to a different level:
- A new unit mission is assigned based on the new level.
- The original unit mission is removed from the student's queue.
- The change takes effect immediately.
What can't I change about a Learning Path placement?
There are some parts of a Learning Path placement that teachers cannot change:
| Action | Can I do it? |
| Move a student to a different level | Yes. You can do this at any time. |
| Remove a placement entirely | No. Once assigned, a placement stays assigned. You can only change its level. |
| Change the due date | No. All Learning Path missions default to the end of the school year. |
| Choose or edit the content inside a placement | No. Content is determined by the student's assessment performance. |
What happens when new assessment scores are available?
When students take the assessment again during a later testing window, updated scores are used to generate updated recommendations.
You'll see a notification on the Placements tab when updates are available. You can then follow the same workflow to auto-assign using Assign all or Review and assign placements individually.
If you approve a new recommendation for a student who already has a placement, the new unit mission replaces the previous one.
Who can assign Learning Path placements?
For BTS '26, only teachers can assign and manage Learning Path placements.
Admins can view assessment data and Learning Paths data in reports and , but they cannot assign placements on behalf of teachers.
