What happened to Course Mastery?
If you're using Khan Academy's reimagined classroom experience, you may notice that Course Mastery Goals and course mastery percentages are no longer available.
Instead, your progress is tracked through Unit Missions. Unit Missions break a course into smaller learning goals while continuing to track your progress on individual skills.
What will I see instead?
In the reimagined experience, you won't see:
- A course mastery percentage on the course page
- Mastery points or "X,XXX possible mastery points"
- The Start Mastery Challenge button
Instead, each Unit Mission shows how many skills you need to reach Proficient to complete that unit (for example, "0 of 4 skills to Proficient").
Your existing skill progress has not been lost. If your teacher assigns Unit Missions that include skills you've already worked on, your previous progress will be reflected automatically.

How is progress measured now?
Your skill levels haven't changed. Skills can still be Familiar, Proficient, or Mastered.
What's changed is how Khan Academy measures your progress toward completing learning goals.
In the classic experience, progress toward Course Mastery was based on mastery points earned across an entire course.
In the reimagined experience, progress is measured by the number of skills that reach Proficient or higher within each Unit Mission.
| Classic experience | Reimagined experience | |
| Progress is measured across | Entire course | Individual units |
| Progress is based on | Mastery points | Skills at Proficient or higher |
| Completion is based on | A percentage of mastery points | 100% of skills at Proficient or higher |
Is my progress gone?
No!
Your skill progress (Familiar, Proficient, and Mastered) is preserved regardless of which experience you're using.
If your teacher assigns Unit Missions that include skills you've already completed, your previous progress will be reflected automatically.
What if I'm an independent learner?
If you use Khan Academy on your own (not as part of a class), you may still see the classic experience, including course mastery percentages and Mastery Challenges.
