How do I upload images to Khanmigo in the reimagined Khan Academy?
If you're working through a challenging math or science problem, you can attach an image in your Khanmigo conversation in the Tutor Me activity. Whether it's a diagram, graph, handwritten work, or another relevant visual, adding an image helps Khanmigo better understand your question and provide more specific and personalized support.
Note: This feature is only available to users with Khanmigo access, either through a personal purchase, parent-granted access, or a Khan Academy Districts partnership that has enabled the feature.
Which types of images work best?
To get the most out of this feature, make sure your image clearly supports your question or learning goal in math or science. Here are a few good examples:
- A photo of your handwritten math problem to check your steps
- A geometry diagram you're trying to solve
- A science diagram (like a circuit or a cell structure) that needs an explanation
- A graph or data set that you want help interpreting
How to attach an image
1. Navigate to the Tutor Me activity on Khanmigo.
2. Click the + (plus) icon in the chat.
3. Choose how you'd like to upload your image: Files, Camera, or From URL.
Note: If using the Camera option, you'll need to grant your browser permission to access your camera.
4. Add your question or prompt in the text box — this helps Khanmigo know how to help you. It is required to include a message or question with your image. The system doesn't allow image-only submissions.
5. Click Send.
Supported image types
You can attach the following types of images:
- PNG
- JPEG
Screenshots, mobile phone photos, and scanned documents all work great. Once submitted, thumbnails are clickable to reveal a full-screen rendering of the image.
⚠️ Note: The Khan Academy app does not currently support image input. If you need this feature on mobile, we recommend using the mobile web version instead.
What not to attach
Please avoid attaching the following types of images, as they may be flagged or ignored by the moderation system:
- Images that contain personal or sensitive information
- Images that are not related to schoolwork or learning
- Inappropriate, offensive, or disruptive content
- Blurry, blank, or unreadable images
Sticking to clear, relevant, and educational images helps keep Khanmigo safe and focused on learning.
Important: If a child's chat is flagged by the moderation system, their connected adult will automatically receive an email notification. This notification includes an AI-generated description of the flagged image. Parents can also review past flagged Khanmigo conversations through their child's chat history page.
What happens to the images?
Images you attach are only visible during your live chat session. Once you close the chat, the image is removed to protect your privacy and ensure security. Images uploaded to Khanmigo are never stored on Khan Academy servers.
In your chat history, you'll see a placeholder along with a brief, AI-generated description of the image, so you can still reference what was shared.
