What accessibility features are available in Khan Academy Reimagined?

Khan Academy Reimagined includes a variety of accessibility features and supports designed to help learners access content in ways that work best for them.

This article provides an overview of accessibility-related features available in Khan Academy Reimagined, including accessibility settings, screen reader support, keyboard navigation, video accommodations, and text-to-speech options.

Accessibility settings

You can customize several accessibility settings from the Personalization page.

To access these settings:

  1. Select Settings from the navigation menu.
  2. Select the Personalization tab.
  3. Scroll to the Accessibility section.

The Accessibility section includes options that support how you see, hear, or interact with content.

Hide visually-dependent content

This setting prioritizes content and experiences that are widely accessible, particularly for learners who use assistive technologies such as screen readers.

Content remains available, but Khan Academy Reimagined will prioritize options that rely less on visual information.

Reduce motion and animations

This setting limits motion effects and animations throughout the experience.

If your device is already configured to prefer reduced motion, animations may automatically be reduced regardless of this setting.

Remove color from videos

This setting displays videos in grayscale for learners who find black-and-white content easier to perceive.

Mute sound effects

This setting turns off interface sound effects throughout the experience.

Video settings

Khan Academy Reimagined also includes settings that can make video content easier to access.

From the Video section of the Personalization page, you can:

  • Mute videos by default
  • Turn captions on or off
  • Adjust video playback speed

Captions

You can turn captions on or off from your Personalization settings.

Playback speed

You can adjust video playback speed to learn at a pace that works best for you.

Mute videos

You can choose to have videos play without sound by default.

Screen reader support

Khan Academy Reimagined is designed to work with commonly used screen readers, including:

  • NVDA
  • JAWS
  • VoiceOver

For the best experience, we recommend using the latest version of your browser, operating system, and assistive technology.

If you use a screen reader and encounter content that is difficult to access, please contact Khan Academy Support and include details about the page or activity you were using.

Text-to-speech support

Khanmigo includes a built-in text-to-speech feature that can read Khanmigo responses aloud.

In other areas of Khan Academy Reimagined, learners may also use supported screen readers or their device's built-in text-to-speech tools.

The availability of text-to-speech features may vary depending on your device, browser, and assistive technology.

Keyboard navigation

Many areas of Khan Academy Reimagined can be accessed using a keyboard.

Common keyboard controls include:

  • Tab to move between interactive elements
  • Shift + Tab to move backward
  • Enter or Space to activate buttons, links, and other controls

If you encounter an area that is difficult to navigate using only a keyboard, please let us know.

For the best experience, we recommend using a supported browser, including:

  • Google Chrome
  • Microsoft Edge
  • Mozilla Firefox
  • Safari
