Quick-Start Guide: Parents of Children Ages 13+
If you have an urgent need to get your kids started in Khan Academy, this guide will walk you through getting your child signed up and set up on Khan Academy first – and then setting up a parent account so that you can support their learning. However, in most cases we strongly recommend creating your parent account first and then adding your children through your Parent Dashboard (the method outlined in this guide).
Note: if your child is under 13, there’s a better way to get set up; use this guide instead.
Step 1: Creating your child’s account (5 min)
Step 2: Starting to Learn (10 min)
Step 3: Connecting a parent account (Optional)
Learning on phone or tablet (Optional)
-----
Step 1: Creating your child’s account (5 min)
(If your child already uses Khan Academy, skip to Step 2.)
Creating an account lets your child (and you) track progress and time spent learning.
Have your child go to www.khanacademy.org and create an account:
- Go to Khan Academy and click Sign Up in the upper right corner.
- On the sign-up page, enter a date of birth.
- Sign up via Google or Facebook, or create a username + password.
Step 2: Starting to Learn (10 min)
If your child already uses Khan Academy, they can keep learning where they left off. If your child is new to Khan Academy, the next step is to choose a starting point for their learning journey. Have your child follow these steps:
-
In the “Personalize Khan Academy” popup, select grade and click Continue.
-
On the next page, you’ll see courses that we recommend for your child. Choose one or more and click Continue. (You can click the “See All” link to view the full menu.)
Your child is ready to go! Have them click the blue “Start” button for any course to start with the very first lesson, or click the See All link to browse the entire course. Tip: Most Khan Academy math courses include a Course Challenge that can help you quickly find where your child needs practice and where they’re already good to go. To get there, scroll to the bottom of the course page and click “Start Course Challenge”. These usually take 30-45 minutes and will give you some good clues about where to direct their learning.

Step 3: Connecting a parent account
Setting up a parent account allows you to track your child’s progress and time spent on Khan Academy. If you don’t yet have a parent account:
- Go to Khan Academy and Click Sign Up in the upper right corner.
- On the signup page, select “Parent”.
- Sign up via Google or Facebook, or create a username + password.
Once you’re signed up, you’ll be taken to the parent dashboard:
- Click Add a Child.
- Click the “My child already has an account” link.
- Enter your child’s email address and click Next.
Your child will receive an email with a link to confirm the connection to your account.
Once your child activates via the link, refresh your Parent Dashboard and click your child’s username. This takes you to the Progress report, where you can keep track of what they’re learning, and how much time they’re spending. (Your child can also see this report through their account by clicking “Progress” in their left navigation.)
Tip: With Khan Academy, you can be a learner too! Follow along with your child’s learning, refreshing your math skills and building new ones. To join your child on their learning journey:
- Click your name in the upper right corner of the page
- Select “Learner Home”. This is where you get to start your own learning journey! Search for individual video tutorials, or dive into a full course… the choice is yours. (Many of us who are parents at Khan Academy do this… high school was just so long ago.)
Learning on phone or tablet (Optional)
The Khan Academy mobile app is available on both iOS and Android. Your child can download the app to access our full library of math practice and instruction, along with many other courses, on their mobile device. Have them sign-in on the app with the same credentials they used on the web so all their practice is tracked under the same account. (Parent tools are not available in the mobile app.)
