Welcome to Khan Academy! Parents are key in supporting their children’s learning on Khan Academy. We are here to get you and your kiddos started as quickly and easily as possible.

We have split this guide into different sections. You can complete Steps 1-4 in about 15 minutes, but you can skip ahead to just the parts you need using the links in the steps below:

Step 1: Create or log into your existing Khan Academy parent account

Step 2: View your Parent Dashboard

Step 3: Connect your children to your parent account

Step 4: Have your child log in

Step 5: Learn more about and get started with Course Mastery

Step 6: Following your child's progress

Step 7: Consider Khanmigo

-----

Step 1: Create or log into your Khan Academy parent account

First things first: if you don’t already have one, you’ll want to create an account for yourself. To do this, go to the Khan Academy home page and click "Log in" or "Sign up"

Step 2: View your Parent Dashboard

Once you're logged in, you'll see Parent Dashboard. This is your hub for all things Khan Academy for Parents.

You can always come back to the Parent Dashboard by clicking your name in the top righthand corner, and "Parent Dashboard" from the dropdown.

If you do not see the Parent Dashboard option in the drop-down menu, double check you have selected the Parent role on your account settings page.

Step 3: Connect your children to your Parent Account

To connect with your child, click on the Add a child button on the Parent Dashboard

If your child does not have a Khan Academy account:

  • If your child is under 13, you can create an account for them by choosing a username + password they can use to log in.
  • If they are above 13, you can send an invitation to their email address to sign up for an account on their own. Then they can invite you to connect you as their parent from their Learner Home.

If your child already has a Khan Academy account:

  • You can send an invite to the email address connected to their Khan Academy account. Then they will log in, and accept the invitation from their Learner Home.

  • If your child has a Khan Academy account, but does not have an email address attached to it, they will need to log into their account and invite you to be their parent on their Learner Home.

Step 4: Helping your child log In

Now that you’re connected to your child’s account, the next step is to have your child log into their account. Your child can then log in using the username and password you created for them, or through their existing login methods on their account.

Step 5: Your child starts working on Khan Academy!

Khan Academy offers a variety of material about a wide variety of subjects in 50+ languages! We have articles, videos, exercises, quizzes, unit tests, and more that your child can learn with. All content is completely free too!

  • Topics include science, English Language Arts, math, grammar, art history, computer programming, economics, AP prep, SAT prep, and more!
  • For state-aligned math content, check out our standards mapping by state.
  • You and your child can view all our courses by clicking the Explore dropdown menu in the top left corner of any page, or searching for a specific topic.

Your child can work independently, or via assignments you create for them on the Assignments tab of your Parent Dashboard.

Step 6: Following your child’s progress

You can view your child’s progress on Khan Academy in 3 places:

1. The Activity Overview Report on the Activity tab
Click on your child’s name to view their activity in the courses across Khan Academy.  This includes work your child did at home and at school, broken down by Khan Academy course.

2. The Individual Student Report from the Activity tab
Click the person iconnext to you child's name to be taken directly to their Learner Home. Here you'll see additional progress info, and if applicable, their Khanmigo Chat History and Khanmigo settings page.

3. The Assignment Scores report from the Assignments tab
If you have made assignments for your child, you can see the scores for them here.

Step 7: Consider Khanmigo!

Khanmigo is our AI powered tutor for learners, and also has a variety of tools built just for parents! Khanmigo is a great option if your child could use an additional helping hand while working on Khan Academy, and if you would like some additional tools in your toolkit when helping them do so.

You can learn more about Khanmigo for learners and parents here on the Khanmigo website and on the Khanmigo section of the Help Center.

We hope this was helpful in getting you started as a parent on Khan Academy! If you have any questions or need assistance, feel free to reach out to the Khan Academy Support Team! We are here and happy to help.
