How do I use assignments for teacher-paced practice?

With our Back-To-School features, teachers can choose to give classes or groups of students the same set of problems or a different set within a topic and can get real-time data on class and individual progress for each problem in a Khan Academy assignment. This means that at any point during class, you can identify students who need one-on-one attention, create groups of students who would work well together, debrief individual problems, or review common wrong answers to highlight prominent misconceptions.

Benefits of Khan's teacher-paced practice:

• Ensure that students are prioritizing appropriately and using their class time wisely.
• Identify problems that will facilitate relevant discussions and debates.
• See immediately when exercises are too easy or too difficult by tracking the entire class's progress.

How to use teacher-paced practice:

• Find the content that you want to assign, check that it is aligned to your standards, and preview the exact material your students will see.
  
  

Explore hundreds of exercises, videos, articles, quizzes, and unit tests to assign on the Content tab; choose to assign single items, or to assign an entire lesson, unit, or course; select different courses to assign from by selecting the course drop-down. Standards will be available for Common Core Math, and will be available on the Content tab or for searching. Clicking on a standard will also expand its definition.

• Assign an exercise.

Teachers now have several options when creating an assignment for groups or individuals. You can:

• choose to give students the same or different questions (students will have the same number of problems regardless),
• assign to one class or multiple classes, one student or multiple students, 
• choose a start date (assignments created in future dates will be Scheduled and assignments created on the current date will be Active),
• choose a due date, and
• whether to assign the material now or to save it for later.

Note: The ability to choose for students to receive the same problems is only available for some exercises, and is not available for quizzes or tests.

•  Check on assignments.

All active assignments live on the Assignments tab. This is where you can track completion as it comes in, and can take administrative action on assignments, including extending a due date or manually adding new students to an assignment. To view the real-time report, click View Report. 

• Identify the wrong answers.

Our new features also allow teachers to select specific problems to go over with their class as a whole. In this view, teachers can see the most common wrong answers students submitted, identifying common misconceptions, and working together to address them. You can choose to expand names to see individual student respondents or keep that collapsed to protect privacy. Then, you can select Reveal answer, which highlights the correct answer in green. In addition, you can see the Solution to view Khan Academy’s scaffolded response to this question or Draw to open a scratchpad to write and talk through a problem.

• Check the overall assignment progress.

At the end of a class, you can see how that practice session compared with other assignments by looking at the Assignments tab Scores view. Here, you can see all the assignments you have assigned to your class and your students' best score on those assignments. You can also filter the results by specific due dates, pull up an assignment report by clicking the assignment name, pull up a student report by clicking a student's name, and pull up an assignment report filtered for an individual student but clicking an individual score. Assignments in green are scores of 100%. Assignments in yellow are between 71% and 99%. Assignments in red are below 70%. When this view first launches, teachers will not be able to choose custom color/score ranges.

• See individual student assignment history.

To get a deeper understanding of student completion and effort, teachers can open the individual student report. Assignments are ordered with the assignment farthest into the future at the top. Each assignment shows the assignment, due date, status, number of attempts the student took, and the student's best score. This page is conveniently printer-friendly, and can be shared with students or with parents.

• And finally, view your students' experience! 

Students will see their assignments on their Learner Home page, under their course (pictured above). Student assignments are sorted into Active and Past assignments. Active assignments are sorted with the assignment due closest today at the top. When students complete an assignment, it is removed from the Active tab and added to the Past tab. Students can always try an assignment again, and their scores will be updated in their teacher’s report. Students can also review their assignments by clicking on their performance, and seeing how they answered individual questions.
