Admin Guide: How to install the Khanmigo Teacher Tools on your Canvas instance

Khanmigo Teacher Tools + Canvas Installation Instructions

We are so glad you are installing the Khanmigo Teacher Tools for the educators within your Canvas instance or sub-accounts within your Canvas instance! 

There are 3 steps you need to do in order to complete installation. Click on a step below to skip to that section of this document:  

  1. LTI Registration
  2. Installing Khanmigo Teacher Tools as an Application
  3. Add required URLs to your allowlist(s)

Shortcut! Already familiar with app installation and just want the quick info? Here ya go! 

  1. The tools can be installed on Canvas Beta, Test and Production Environments.
    - If you or your teachers would like to play around with the Khanmigo teacher tools outside of Canvas, you can sign up for free on https://www.khanmigo.ai/teachers 
  2. The LTI Registration URL: https://www.khanacademy.org/canvas/install-khanmigo-teacher-tools?embedded=1 
  3. All settings are optional and can be de-selected
  4. Then Copy the Client ID and add it on the App installation page for your Canvas instance or specific sub-accounts of your instance. Ensure the  
  5. *khanacademy.org and khanacademy.zendesk.com need to be added to your organization’s Firewall and Adblocker allowlists
  6. Then your teachers need to unhide the tools via their course navigation settings. Further instructions are in this article: How do I use the Khanmigo Teacher Tools in my Canvas account? 

Part 1: LTI Registration

Step 1. Login to Canvas as an Administrator. 

Step 2:. On the left toolbar, click Admin then select your account 

             

Step 3: Select Developer keys from the left menu

               

Step 4: Click on the + Developers Key button, and select LTI Registration

             

Step 5: Enter the below URL  and click “Continue” https://www.khanacademy.org/canvas/install-khanmigo-teacher-tools?embedded=1

       

Step 6: Click “Enable Khanmigo Teacher Tools”

       

Step 7:  In the LTI Advantage Services section, the settings are enabled by default, but are not required. You can un-check all of these

   

Step 8: Click the “Enable and Close” button

     

Step 9: Double check the “State” toggle is set to ON  

     

Step 10: Congratulations! You are done with this section. Move onto the section below to complete the Khanmigo Teacher Tools installation. 

  • Tip! Copy the Client ID from the Developer Keys page, as it is unique to your Canvas instance and you will need to paste it in to complete the application setup steps below 

Part 2: Installing Khanmigo Teacher Tools as an Application

Step 1: Deciding which educators on your Canvas instance you would like to install the Khanmigo Teacher Tools for 

  • If you would like to enable Khanmigo Teacher Tools for all educators within your entire Canvas instance, remain logged into your Canvas Admin account and then click the “Settings” button from your admin portal.
         
  • If you only wish to enable Khanmigo Teacher Tools for educators only within a specific sub-account then navigate to desired sub-account by clicking “Sub-Accounts” and then following the steps 

             

Step 2: From the settings page, click “Apps” tab

Step 3: Click on “View App Configurations” 

Step 4: Click on the blue “+ App” button 

Step 5: In the Add App dialog, select “By Client ID” under the Configuration Type option 

Step 6: Add the Khanmigo Teacher Tools Client ID and click Submit. 

  • Your unique Client ID is located in the “Developer Keys” section of your admin dashboard. See Step 10 of the previous section to find your unique Client ID.  

Step 7: Click “Install”

Step 8: Click “Yes, Install Tool” to finish the process

Step 9: Congratulations! The Khanmigo Teacher tools are now installed and available for educators within your Canvas instance or specific sub-account within your Canvas instance. Proceed to the final section to complete installation. 

  • To confirm the Khanmigo Teacher Tools were installed properly, check to see if “Khanmigo Teacher Tools” is listed on the “App Configurations” page. 

   

     

Allowlist required URLs (also known as whitelisting)

You’re almost there! Time for the final step. In order for the Khanmigo Teacher tools to run without connectivity issues, the following domains must be added to the allowlist by your institution: 

Please note: these URLs need to be added to your firewall’s allowlist, and if applicable, your Adblocker’s allowlist
