Backgrounds were one of the best customizable things in Khan Academy, and losing backgrounds felt like losing profiles themselves. In the next big update, KA should bring back the original backgrounds, along with new backgrounds. You should also have a feature that when you unlock the last background at 1,000,000 (1 million) energy points, then you can unlock an option to upload your own images or GIFs as your background and/or avatar. Maybe this would be better off at 1,500,000 ( 1 million and five hundred thousand) or maybe even 2,000,000 (2 million) energy points. I urge KA to consider this idea.

Thanks for taking the time to share your feedback on this!

Removing backgrounds was definitely a hard decision for us to make given that they were beloved by so many. This change was driven by our need to simplify our ongoing code migration to a different programming language, and was supported by the observation that very few user accounts had changed their background from the default one. You can learn more about this decision here.

As mentioned in the response to that thread, our team is still working on making user profiles more fun and engaging, and this is something that is likely to continue to change and evolve over the years. If you'd like, I encourage you to add your feedback to the existing thread on avatars/backgrounds so that our team can take your ideas into consideration as we continue along our design journey.

Backgrounds please!

I too have over 1 million energy points and loved this feature, it was soooo cool to customize your Home Screen for Khan.
