Khan Academy’s automatic account deletion policies and procedures
In accordance with the Khan Academy privacy policy, inactive Khan Academy accounts are deleted after 2 years of inactivity. This policy is designed to protect user’s safety and optimize computing space.
Below is some additional information about the account deletion policy and process:
What does inactive mean?
- Khan Academy determines inactive accounts by looking at sign-ins, learning progress, and other activities over the last two years. If you have signed in, made progress in a course, or chatted with Khanmigo at any point within the previous two years – or if your account is affiliated with an active Khan Academy Districts subscription, or has a child account associated with it – then your account is considered active.
Will I be notified if my account is scheduled to be deleted?
Yes. We will contact you via email if you or your connected child’s account is scheduled for deletion. These emails are sent to the address associated with your account.
You may receive notifications at two different stages:
-
Initial notification (approximately 90 days before deletion):
- Subject line: Important, review your Khan Academy account
- Subject line: Important, review your child's Khan Academy account
-
Reminder notification (approximately 28 days before deletion):
- Subject line: Do you still want your Khan Academy account?
- Subject line: Does your child still want their Khan Academy account?
All emails are sent from: no-reply@khanacademy.org
How do I prevent deletion?
- If you were notified that your account is going to be deleted because of inactivity, you can prevent the deletion by logging into your Khan Academy account. The email associated with your account is the email we sent the message to.
- If you received a notification that your child’s account is going to be deleted because of inactivity, your child will need to log into their account in order to prevent deletion.
What if I received an email about my account, but have been actively using Khan Academy?
- If you recently used your Khan Academy account but still received an account closure email, we likely contacted you about a separate, unused account (possibly one that you forgot you created). Some users have multiple Khan Academy accounts, and even the addition or removal of a period ('.') from the email address can indicate a separate account.
What happens when my account is deleted?
- All progress, points, badges, comments, projects, and other user data associated with the account are permanently deleted, with no way to recover the data.
