Content update: New credit and banking content in Financial Literacy, plus new state-specific personal finance courses
This summer, Khan Academy is expanding its personal finance offerings with significant updates to our Financial Literacy course and new state-specific personal finance courses for Florida, Indiana, and Texas.
Together, these updates provide students and teachers with more opportunities to build practical financial knowledge and prepare for real-world financial decisions. We expect to publish these updates and curations in late June.
This update is part of Khan Academy’s 2026 back-to-school content rollout. You can view the full 2026 Back To School course overview here.
Expanded Financial Literacy course
Our updated Financial Literacy course includes substantial new content focused on the financial decisions students are most likely to encounter in early adulthood.
What's new?
Students will find new lessons covering topics such as:
- understanding and analyzing credit reports
- reading credit card statements
- comparing the benefits and drawbacks of credit cards
- depositing and writing checks
- healthcare terms such as copays, deductibles, and coinsurance
- insurance options and car warranties
- bankruptcy and its long-term financial impact
These additions help make the course even more practical by focusing on everyday financial situations that many students will face after high school.
For teachers
Teachers will find:
- expanded lessons covering frequently requested personal finance topics
- ready-to-use instruction on credit, banking, healthcare, and insurance
- a life-skills course that does not require math prerequisites
- a dedicated Teacher Resources unit with classroom activities, games, and supplemental materials
New state-specific personal finance courses
We're also introducing new personal finance courses designed to support state-specific graduation requirements and standards.
New courses include:
- Personal Financial Responsibility (Indiana)
- Personal Financial Literacy (TEKS)
- Personal Finance and Money Management (FL B.E.S.T.)
These courses organize Khan Academy resources around each state's standards while helping students build practical financial knowledge they can apply throughout their lives.
Students will explore topics including:
- budgeting and money management
- credit and borrowing
- insurance
- taxes
- saving and investing
- identity theft and fraud prevention
- planning for college and future financial goals
What can teachers expect?
Each of these state-specific courses is designed to help teachers implement financial literacy instruction with less preparation time.
Teachers will find:
- standards-aligned content for their state
- flexible collections of videos, articles, and exercises
- ready-to-use classroom resources
- dedicated Teacher Resources units with supplemental activities
- practical, real-world financial scenarios that students immediately recognize
Whether students are learning about budgeting, credit, taxes, or investing, these courses focus on building financial decision-making skills rather than requiring advanced mathematics.
Why are these updates being made?
Financial literacy is becoming an increasingly important part of graduation requirements and life after high school.
These updated and new courses are designed to help students build practical financial knowledge before they encounter many of these situations in real life.
From understanding credit reports to evaluating insurance options and planning for long-term financial goals, these resources help prepare students for the financial decisions they'll make throughout adulthood.
