Content update: Introducing Khan Academy’s Middle School Chemistry course!

We are thrilled to announce the launch of our brand-new Middle School Chemistry course! This course is designed to spark students’ curiosity and build a strong chemistry foundation, while also equipping educators with engaging, standards-aligned resources.

Real science, real-world connections

Aligned to the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS), this course introduces students to chemistry topics such as atoms and the periodic table, phase changes, chemical reactions, and heat capacity. The course brings chemistry to life with clear explanations, everyday examples, and authentic, real-world phenomena. Dive into the course to explore why water freezes and butter melts, why helium floats in air but lead sinks, and why a single pinch of neutron star has the mass of a mountain!

Meaningful practice

Students can work through interactive exercises that reinforce core ideas and invite them to put their science practices into action. The course offers two types of exercises: our Understand exercises help solidify core concepts and vocabulary, while our Apply exercises give students the opportunity to use scientific reasoning, interpret models, analyze data, and more. 

Flexible resources for the classroom

Teachers will find brand-new, targeted videos and articles ideal for differentiated instruction. Short videos reduce cognitive load, concise readings support key ideas, and multimodal resources let students learn in the way that works best for them.
