Content update: New on Khan Academy: Reading and Vocab courses for grades 4 and 5!
We’re ecstatic to introduce two brand-new English language arts courses: 4th Grade Reading & Vocab and 5th Grade Reading & Vocab. These mastery-enabled courses are packed with engaging practice, thoughtful strategy instruction, and high-interest reading materials designed to help students grow into confident, capable readers.
For students and families: Build your skills, explore great texts, and grow as a reader
Fun, flexible practice with short texts
Each course includes 155 to 160 short reading passages across 11 skills-based practice exercises. As you read, you’ll practice key comprehension skills like making inferences, identifying text structure, analyzing arguments, and more.
Read longer texts with purpose to hone your skills and build stamina
Work your way up to longer reading passages. Each course includes 18 long-passage exercises drawn from exciting fiction and nonfiction. These texts help you apply what you’ve learned and get ready for state assessments.
Master the strategies strong readers use
You’ll learn nine key reading strategies, including visualizing, making predictions, using context clues, and activating background knowledge. Each strategy comes with an article that explains how it works, plus practice to help you build good reading habits.
Boost your vocabulary
Across three units per course, you’ll learn 24 high-frequency, high-utility vocabulary words, complete with definitions, pronunciation guides, and example sentences. Vocabulary articles, quizzes, and engaging videos help you lock in what you’ve learned.

Nonfiction selections are pulled from engaging titles like Packing for Mars for Kids, Five Epic Disasters, To the Moon!, and Black Inventors.
Vocabulary instruction that sticks
With 24 carefully chosen vocabulary words per course, students get repeated exposure to important academic language. Each word is introduced with clear definitions, pronunciation guides, and example sentences, and supported with videos and quizzes that reinforce knowledge across contexts.
