Content Update: Khan Academy’s Grades 3–5 Illustrative Math courses just got even better!
We’ve refreshed our 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade Illustrative Math courses with new videos, new exercises, and even more support for conceptual understanding, all aligned to the Illustrative Mathematics curriculum and designed to meet students where they are.
What’s new?
-
More visual tools like number lines, area models, and arrays help students represent and understand math concepts. These visuals appear in questions, answer choices, and hints making it easier to see what’s happening step by step.
-
Step-by-step hints break down complex problems into manageable parts, often using color, pictures, and clear strategies to support student thinking and build confidence.
-
Real-world connections show students how math shows up in everyday life: whether it’s dividing a recipe, reading a chart, or comparing prices, making learning more meaningful and engaging.
Stronger support for teachers
The courses remain fully aligned with Illustrative Mathematics, giving teachers a seamless supplement that reinforces classroom instruction. New videos and exercises emphasize conceptual understanding, encouraging students to explain their reasoning and make sense of the math, not just memorizing steps.
Made for all kinds of learners
With a mix of visual models, practice problems, and flexible teaching tools, this update supports differentiated instruction and helps the student deepen their understanding in ways that work for them.
Explore the updated courses today and help students in grades 3–5 build confidence, curiosity, and real-world math skills that last.
Mastery changes
One thing to note: When we add content, your Mastery percentage may go down, since the overall skills available will increase (for example, instead of mastering 90 out of 100 skills, you’ll now have mastered 90 out of 110, which would reduce your percentage from 90% to 82%). You’ll still have mastered the same number of skills as before you’ll just have additional ones to complete now.
Teachers, in the case we moved or deleted content, this could also impact what you are able to assign as well. If you have any questions or concerns feel free to reach out to us!
