A lady invested a total of $5400 into 2 separate accounts. She invests 3.5% per annum and 10% per annum. After a year the total amount of interest is the same. How much did she invest in each account

This was all I got on a quiz that my teacher gave me and we never learned this.

Let x be invested at 3.5% and y at 10%

x + y = 5400

.035x = .1y => y = .35x

Substitute: x + .35x = 5400 => x = 5400/1.35.

You should be able to do the arithmetic from here.

So x is 4000 and y is 1400.

1st investment is 4000

and

2nd investment is 1400.
