Guessing on Khan Academy and improving the course challenges
Hi guys,
I've noticed a tendency for students to guess on Khan Academy and all other apps which try to gamify the experience ie sumdog, prodigy, minecraft education etc....
They approach the app just like their other computer games and try to rush to the end rather than slowing down and thinking about their learning.
It would be great if we had these features:
- set minimum amount of time per question (I had a student finish a Get Ready for Year 4 Course Challenge in 15 minutes with 50% accuracy).
- reminders to encourage the student to slow down
- reflective
- allow renaming of the word 'CHECK' button that appears with each question. It's confusing for them because checking an answer is usually what a student does themselves to see if their answer 'makes sense'. When I say 'check your answer' to mean self-check, students usually click the CHECK button which is not what I want. Maybe 'MARK'? or 'ANSWER'? Or something else?
- ability to highlight key words in questions
- give extra points for slowing down, highlighting key words
- adding in reflection activities
- a check box for students to tick off: 'Random guess' 'Best guess' ..
- a report for course and mastery challenges that reveals mistakes and attempts a student made, just like assignments
- record time per question for assignments, mastery challenges and course challenges
- not allowing a student to ask for all hints at once. I have students who just keep clicking 'Ask for a hint' until they cycle through all clues and simply copy the answer. Hints should be revealed gradually and locked for say 10s after each click. Then a check box appears with something like: '[] I've tried but I still don't get it'. Then 'Next hint' appears.
Thanks!
