How can I use the Live Team Game in Khan Academy Reimagined?
The Live Team Game is a classroom activity that turns practice into a team-based competition. Students are divided into teams and race to earn Gems by reaching Proficient in skills from their learning queue, while you monitor progress in real time.
Requirements and availability
- Available to Khan Academy Reimagined users only
- Requires mastery-enabled content such as exercises and quizzes
- Note: Khanmigo assignments and Writing Coach will not register on the Live Team Game
How to start a Live Team Game
- Go to your Class Overview page
- In the top-right corner, select Start team game!
How to set up the game
This setup determines how teams are created and how long the activity will run.
After selecting Start team game!, choose your settings:
- Set the timer
- Select which students to include
- Select the # of teams to create
- This is based on how many students you select to play the game
- Add class instructions to guide student work
- Click “Launch team game”
Important to remember:
- Teams are assigned automatically
- Teams are not balanced by skill level
- Team names + Racermigo mascots are assigned automatically and cannot be edited
- Game settings reset after each game
What students do during the game
Once the game starts:
- Each student is placed on a team and sees their team’s Racermigo (replaces their usual Khanmigo)
- Students work from their learning queue
- Gems are earned only when students reach Proficient in a skill
- Every gem earned moves their team’s Racermigo up
- The team with the most Gems at the end of the game wins
Important:
- Students can join at any time during the game and still contribute, as long as they see their Racermigo
- If the student does not see their Racermigo, it might not be reflected on their screen yet. They can refresh their page to make it appear
- Refreshing the page does not interrupt participation
How to monitor the game
Once the game starts, you will be shown the live leaderboard. It shows:
- Remaining time
- Team Gem totals
- Student activity feed
- Class Gem total
From this view, you can:
- Select Edit to update instructions
- Select End live activity to finish the game early
- Turn game sounds on/off
Recommended: Project the live leaderboard so your class can follow along!
Important:
- The leaderboard is only visible when projected (students do not see it individually)
- Games cannot be paused once started
How the game ends
When the timer ends (or you end the game early):
- The final results screen shows the winning team, the class gem total, and other stats
- If teams have the same score, the result is displayed as a tie
- You can celebrate results or start another round
