How do I purchase Khan Academy Districts – Enterprise Starter?

Before you begin
Here are a few things to know before starting your purchase:
- Enterprise Starter seats cost $10 per student per year.
- You can purchase up to 1,000 student seats. Teachers and administrators do not count toward your seat total.
- A credit card issued by a U.S. bank is required for payment.
- If you're purchasing for a public school or district, you'll need your NCES ID number.
- You’ll have the option to apply for tax-exempt status before checkout, if applicable.
- Enterprise Starter is only available to schools and districts in the United States (50 states + DC)
- A receipt will be sent immediately upon purchase and can also be found in the Billing dashboard
How much does it cost?
- Enterprise Starter is priced at $10 per student seat per year, up to a maximum of 1,000 seats. If you anticipate purchasing more than 1,000 seats, our Enterprise plan is your best option.
- If you purchase additional seats throughout the school year, you will be billed at a pro-rated amount.
Who is included in the seat count?
- Only students count toward your seat total. Teachers and administrators are free.
- 1 seat = 1 unique student. A student can be in multiple classes, but they only occupy one seat.
What payment methods are accepted?
- Currently, we accept credit cards issued by U.S. banks only. Other payment methods, such as purchase orders, ACH form, or checks, are not supported.
When does my subscription start and end?
- Your subscription begins as soon as you complete the purchase, and lasts for one calendar year.
- The subscription will auto-renew by default
- You can manage renewal settings from the Billing dashboard
Can I apply for a tax exemption?
Yes. If your school or district is tax-exempt, you can apply for exemption during the checkout process.
- Click Apply for tax exemption during checkout
- Upload your documentation/answer questions
- Once verified, any applicable tax will be removed before you complete your purchase
- Your tax exemption application will undergo further review
- If there are any questions or issues with your exemption application, a member of our Finance team will reach out
Note: The required documents/answers vary by state. If you’re unsure, please confirm what’s needed for your location before starting.
I forgot to apply for tax exemption. Can I apply later?
- Yes, you can apply for tax exemption after your purchase on the Billing dashboard.
- Unfortunately, it won’t apply to your initial purchase and we won’t refund the taxes paid. However, you can submit your documentation and the exemption will apply to future renewals.
School and district verification (NCES IDs)
What is an NCES ID?
An NCES (National Center for Education Statistics) ID is a unique number used to identify public schools and districts in the United States.
- Public school NCES IDs are 12 digits
- District NCES IDs are 7 digits
- Private schools typically don’t have NCES IDs and are not required to enter one
Where can I find my NCES ID?
During checkout, you’ll see a link to search for your school or district’s NCES ID.
How to purchase Enterprise Starter seats
Follow these steps to complete your purchase:

Log in or create a Khan Academy account
- You must be 18 or older
- You’ll be prompted to enter your name and birth month and year

Choose who you’re purchasing for
- Public school district: enter your 7-digit NCES ID
- Public school: enter your 12-digit NCES ID
- Private school: enter your school’s name, state, and ZIP code

Select number of student seats
- Enter any number up to 1,000
- Total cost will update automatically

Apply for tax exemption (optional)
- If your school or district is tax exempt, you can submit your tax exemption certificate during checkout
- Select "Apply for tax exemption"
- Upload required information

Wait for verification before continuing

Enter payment information
- Confirm your billing and contact details
- Review and accept the Terms of Service

Complete your purchase
- Your subscription will start immediately
- You’ll become the first Billing admin for your school or district
- You’ll get access to a settings page where you can manage seats and view subscription details

Additional information regarding tax exemption
How do I submit a tax exemption certificate?
You’ll be asked to:
Select your state or district
Enter your address
Answer various questions, including your exemption reason
Upload your tax exemption certificate
After selecting your file
You'll see the file name and an upload progress bar
You must click the blue Upload button again to fully submit the certificate
Your certificate is not fully submitted until you click the final Upload button
Once your exemption certificate is successfully submitted and validated:
Sales tax will update to $0.00 before you complete your purchase
If sales tax still appears in your order summary, the certificate has not been fully submitted. Return to the tax exemption step and make sure you click the final Upload button to complete the process.
