Can students earn different gem amounts for the same activity?
Opdateret
Yes. Gem amounts vary based on each student’s skill progress during an activity. Students earn:
- 10 gems for bringing a new skill to Proficient
- +5 bonus gems for moving a skill from Proficient to Mastery (in a unit test)
-
0 gems for reaching Familiar or repeating a skill they already brought to Proficient
Because progress is tracked per skill, two students completing the same assignment can earn different amounts of gems.
Why the difference?
Gems are awarded the first time a student brings a skill to Proficient. If they’ve already done that in a prior activity, they won’t earn gems again for that skill, unless they later move it to Mastery.
A few quick examples
Same quiz, different history:
- Student A brings two new skills to Proficient → 20 gems
- Student B brings one new skill to Proficient and had already reached Proficient on the other → 10 gems
Unit test mastery bonus:
- Student A brings 4 skills to Proficient, 2 to Familiar → 40 gems
- Student B brings 4 skills to Proficient, 2 to Mastery → 50 gems
