How do my students earn gems in Khan Academy Reimagined?

Opdateret

In the Khan Academy Reimagined experience, students earn gems by completing meaningful learning activities assigned by their teachers. Teachers set classroom gem goals, but it’s up to students to earn those gems by making progress on their assignments.

This article explains exactly how students earn gems and how different activities contribute to the classroom gem total.

What are gems?

  • Gems are a way to celebrate student effort and progress.
  • When students complete assignments like exercises, quizzes, and Khanmigo activities, they earn gems that count toward their class’s total.
  • Meeting gem goals can help students earn additional perks

How do students earn gems?

  • Students earn gems by completing a variety of assignable activities. Each activity type has a base gem value, and in some cases, bonus gems can be earned.

Here’s a breakdown of activities and gem values:

 Assignable activity type  Gem value
 Exercises

10 gems for bringing one skill to  Proficient.

 1 exercise = 1 skill to proficiency = 10 gems

 Quiz

Varies, based on skills brought to proficiency*

 1 skill to proficient = 10 gems

 Unit Test

Varies, based on skills brought to proficiency*

 1 skill to proficient = 10 gems

Course Challenge  Varies (up to 150). Gems are based on the number of skills promoted  to proficient
Writing Coach 10 gems when assignment is marked complete
 Khanmigo activities

1 gem if the criteria* is met

*Each activity has different criteria. At a minimum, the activity must  be completed and submitted

 Articles and Videos  0 gems

*Please note: If a student has already reached proficiency in a particular skill (in a prior exercise), they won’t earn additional gems for earning the proficient level for the same skill in the quiz/unit-test.

How can students earn bonus gems?

In addition to the base values, students can earn:

  • 5 bonus gems for moving a skill from Proficient to Mastery in a unit test.
  • 10 bonus gems for completing an entire unit that’s part of a teacher-assigned Unit Mastery Goal
  • Optional bonuses for completing all tasks in a day or a week’s assignment set
    • Daily mission = 1 gem
    • Weekly mission = 5 gems

Can students lose gems?

  • No. There is no scenario where a student can lose earned gems, even if they downgraded a skill (Proficient ->Familiar).
    • Earned gems are kept!
  • Additionally, students won’t re-earn gems if they re-leveled a skill back to proficient.

However, all gem challenges reset at the end of the month at midnight PST (when the 1st day of the month starts)
Then the gem count will reset to 0 for the whole class and the individual students.

Where can students and teachers see gem totals?

Students can see the gems they’ve earned and how their contributions help the class move toward its goal. Teachers can also see student-level and class-level gem progress and can choose how and when to celebrate milestones.

Teachers can view gems by clicking on “My Classes”. Each class card displays the total gem count for the current month’s gem challenge.

When you click into a class, you'll also see the gems section in the bottom right-hand corner.

  • There, you can see your class's gem totals, learn more about gems, and set the class reward.

Students can view gems in a few places:

  1. The top righthand corner of their screen shows how many gems the student has earned individually
  2. At the end of each completed activity
  3. The “Achievements” section of the Learner Experience
