Why are some badges becoming retired now?

I know this question has already been asked but it seems to be pretty outdated (2 years ago) so I just wanted to ask why they were becoming retired. I noticed today that some of my old meteorite badges have now become retired. Was it because they were too easy? Was it because they just were taking up space?

The Khan Academy Website underwent a major upgrade this past summer. The changes in the code made it necessary to retire certain badges due to the way the criteria for the badge was calculated.

Ah, thank you for the response! I never heard about the upgrade so I never even though about it.
