Disconnect between Khan Academy Kids account via website and Khan Academy Kids Mobile App

The Khan Academy Kids app is a completely separate platform from the Khan Academy desktop site, so the two platforms use different logins and contain different content.

If you want your kids to work on the same content that is available on the desktop site, they will need to use the regular Khan Academy mobile app instead of the Khan Academy Kids mobile app. This will then allow them to use their username/password that you created for them to log in.

Will the same Pre-K content be available on the Khan Academy app as on the Kids app?

No, it’s completely separate.

I'm with Steve here. I FULLY expected that my children could login to the app OR the website; their account would be same on both platforms; that I, as parent, could login to the website and see their progress (whether they made said progress on the mobile device or the laptop).

SO... if that's NOT how it works, you might consider PUTTING THAT ON THE LOGIN SCREEN. I've gone through the process a dozen times now to change the password, confirm it... make new account without an email address, try it on the other platform... stare dumbly at the login screen KNOWING I entered the email and password without error...

There are two different ways to access Khan Academy, either on the website or on the Khan Academy app. They have the same content for most lessons, but some content can only be accessed on the website.

When you create the accounts on khan academy, you can choose to have kids login with an email address or username. Both the app and website allow kids to login to their account with usernames.

Khan Academy has curriculum for math (k-12+), grammar, ela (2-9), science (hs), humanities (hs), computer science, etc. There is no content that teaches colors, sight words, phonics or spelling.

Khan Academy Kids is a separate platform only available as an app. It’s geared to age 2-grade 2. The content for preschool and kindergarten covers critical thinking, colors, shapes, letters, phonics, listening, numeracy, sight words, etc. The content for grade 1-2 covers addition, subtraction, sight words, phonics, spelling, numeracy and shapes.

Khan Academy Kids can only be accessed through a parent or teacher login.  You can create numerous different profiles for children, but they are accessed by the child choosing their avatar and name without having their our username or password.

Think of it like a parent company spinning off a division, and while they share the same base name, they don’t communicate about everything. In this case, they have different personnel for everything, including support, and the sites are not compatible in any way.

My twin kindergarteners had accounts on khan academy this year, and they earned points and badges, neither of which can be used, On the khan kids app, they had profiles (not accounts, profiles connected to my account). Every third to fourth lesson (I think) they got to pick one prize to see in one of the characters’ rooms, but there are no points of badges.

The little kids’ site is extremely gamified, as supposedly it makes kids want to learn more. For these girls, it made them frustrated, because it kept interrupting the learning with random songs and mini games, so we learned which type of lesson was most annoying and I stopped assigning them.

Tl/dr: two completely different platforms, same name, different content, way to login, ways of teaching and rewards.

P Rossell, yes I understand now the mobile app and the website are completely seperate.

I still think it's not what users would expect.

I suspect the division is a technology problem too expensive to solve. I suspect the Product Managers at Khan Academy agree with me and I suspect their wish list includes the merging of these user accounts.

I suspect Khan Academy's mobile app was developed separately - likely a different company entirely - then was acquired by Khan Academy and branded accordingly. (Like you said: like "a spin off company".) But the fact of that has produced a broken experience for the users.

No, a group was tasked with creating a free app to shrink the socio-economic gap for preschool and kindergarten, to give kids more of a level playing field. Because they weren’t old enough to read and the KAK app was intended to function without requiring an adult’s help, they needed to be logged in through the adult’s account, then switch profiles by choosing their avatar.

The KA app and KAK apps are not the same. Khan Academy app is the same account as the website. Khan Academy Kids is not.
