Well, I was doing some early math today (I already know it obviously but I’ve found that going over old stuff helps me to be even faster when solving equations) and I was on skip counting with tens. I had some blanks to fill in. It was something like this:

Fill in the missing numbers when skip counting by ten

656 ___ ___ 686 696 ___

Nothing seems wrong until you find the answer for the first blank. A triple six. In some belief systems, this is a rather nasty number. I think that a Christian kid who could be trying to learn some math could stumble upon it and be confused. It’s not super likely, but it still could happen.

I wasn’t personally offended and actually got a good laugh but it’s something that the great KA team may want to look at changing. I’m sure there are a lot of other numbers to skip count by ten with ;D

I'm pretty sure that the KA team uses randomization for the numbers so it would be a complete coincidence if that were to happen. However, I understand and think that this could be a problem, but you shouldn't worry.

To be honest, I don't think the numbers for these exercises are randomized. I think that someone just happened to use 600 + 10n + 6 in constructing the problem. Yes, this could have been done differently, but I suspect that the person who put it together never considered the religious connotation. As an atheist raised Jewish, I never even knew about 666 and its significance until Ronald Reagan became President when I was 28 years old. At that time, some people were upset that he had 6 letters in each of his three names, which I have, too. I thought it was an interesting piece of knowledge. But I think that any Christian child who is schooled enough in math/arithmetic and then comes across 666 in a math context, would know the difference.
