Youtube Blocked
Our high school blocks youtube videos. Any chance the videos could be added to schooltube or vimeo?

If your school blocks Youtube, and you are unable to load our backup video player (which should load fine in these cases), please send us the diagnostic information using the instructions in this article: https://khanacademy.zendesk.com/hc/en-us/articles/230055848-How-to-find-network-response-data-when-you-re-reporting-errors
Thank you in advance for your help!
You could ask the school board to allow youtube edu.
As of this spring and the new site content the option to use Flash no longer seems to work. Thus in our school I can no longer use khan academy which I had extensively. Is there a way to link directly to flash version of lessons and videos?
Hello @gtslearning! My name is Lisa Krueger and I am a Khan Academy Ambassador teaching in Chicago. Our school district also blocks youtube but the Khan Academy videos still play. Could you give me a little more information regarding your operating systems, devices, and Internet connections? Also, have you ever been able to play the Khan Academy videos? Hopefully, together we can work this out. Thank you for posting.
Thanks for your reply! It seems to be OS and browser independent as both windows 7 and 8 and IE and chrome display the issue.
Its a new development. As I understand if youtube is blocked then Khanacadmy will switch to another video format. this seemed to work until last spring. I would really like to know the technical details how this is done so I can communicate with our IT support.
Also if this is the case is there a way to link directly to this non youtube version?
Hello all! So did some research on my end and I was able to access youtube on the school computers; of course it was trial and error but I figured it out and then found this online resource. Hopefully this helps! As for Khan Academy automatically switching to a different format that I will ask the Khan staff and get back to you. Thank you and keep posting!

Thanks for the reply,
For our School it is not a browser issue. as it is the same regardless of browser. It is a web filter district wide blocking youtube, and no they wont consider unblocking it. Until last spring we were able to view videos because as I understand KA also had another platform to view the videos, now it seems to insist on you-tube. I need to get technical details before I can discuss work around with our IT Dept. Im hoping someone can contact me with that as I have found none pertinent on the site. KA has been a great resource for our students but now is unavailable
There may have been a recent change which has been preventing schools that have blocked Youtube from using our backup video player instead - I've escalated this to our dev team to take a look at.
Sorry for the trouble, but thanks everyone who's contributed to this discussion so far!
Laurie,
Should I expect to hear back from them directly?
Thanks for the help
I'll post here when the issue has been fixed (pretty sure it's on our side). Sorry for the trouble!
Hey folks - I have an update.
So, our developers haven't been able to reproduce this issue on our end, so they are asking a big favor of anyone who's been running into this.
Basically, we need to check out the console logs of your browser when you try to watch videos and are unable to. Here are the instructions: https://khanacademy.zendesk.com/hc/en-us/articles/203580770-Finding-the-console-window
Once you've been able to view the console logs, please send a screenshot of them to us by attaching them to a support ticket that you fill out here: https://khanacademy.zendesk.com/hc/en-us/requests/new
Thank you in advance! This a bug really really want to get to the bottom of quickly.
Has there been a resolution to this issue? My district is considering blocking YouTube and has asked me for guidance. They very much want to make this work so access to Khan Academy videos is seemless.
Hello Geoff! My name is Lisa Krueger and I am a Khan Academy Ambassador teaching in Chicago. My district has similar issues with youtube it that we are currently running a filter for internet content and it is very inconsistent the videos that are allowed through and the ones that are blocked. My understanding is that the Khan Academy content has a built in work-around for the youtube filters because all of its content is school appropriate; however, I don't know how it would work with a block. I would image that you would need to add Khan Academy as an exception or allowed site. I know my district is working on a solution and I am in contact with the individual working on this project, so if you required further assistance I would be happy to reach out to my contact. Please let me know if you have any further questions, comments, or suggestions. Thank you for posting and Good Luck!
I got the same problem today. We block YouTube at the DNS level at our school, so when it loads, the DNS filter directs to a "page blocked" site. In Windows 10 on Chrome and Firefox it gave errors.
I finally got around it by temporarily unblocking it but this won't work as a long term solution because YouTube has content that is inappropriate for children, not to mention it is abounding in videos that while not exactly inappropriate for the young is the type of pablum that makes anyone stupider for having watched it.
I've considered some kind of annoyingly specific whitelist technology, but it would be better if KA's workaround worked. Because of the extra time it took to get working, kids missed learning time today.
If I have some time this weekend I'll look at more debugging info, but I suspect the issue with my filter and possibly others is the DNS based blocking didn't return a timeout (as if it were firewalled) but an actual site with a "blocked" message. I may file a ticket with the filtering service, too, but in my opinion it is a bad move to default to hosting educational content on a service that there are very good reasons for an educational network to block.
Here is the error in FireFox
This is the Console Output:
Loading failed for the <script> with source “https://www.youtube.com/iframe_api”. atomic-structure-and-properties:1
HTTP load failed with status 404. Load of media resource https://www.khanacademy.org/science/chemistry/undefined#t=0 failed. atomic-structure-and-properties
Opened it with the Network info to see if that offered anything, but just ... tries to load the iframe, gets an empty response with a 404 code, and fails.
In Chrome, I get "iframe_api Failed to load resource: net::ERR_INSECURE_RESPONSE
undefined#t=0 Failed to load resource: the server responded with a status of 404 ()"
In the Network Tab, all I get are no response for the iframe_api call, and no response for "undefined" right after that.
Hello Nathan! My school is experiencing the same issue - youtube is blocked and students can't play the videos. We are thinking about allowing access to youtube at a school level and using GoGuardian to monitor student access to youtube content. I know Khan Academy staff are aware of the connectivity issues and will post again if I have any updates. Thank you for the screen shots. Please let me know if you have any further questions, comments, or suggestions. Thank you for posting.
Our district in Georgia is primarily working on chromebooks and we have youtube blocked. In the last few weeks, teachers have started experiencing the blocked videos. If there is a work around discovered in the last few months, please let me know.
Hello all! I am sorry to report that I have no news to report. Our school is still experiencing issues with videos as well. One work around we have is to provide the url to our IT dept to allow it through the GoGuardian program we are running. Our IT dept created a workaround in that students and staff can enter their log in information and then access youtube. Both of these cause issues and do not always work. I agree that an alternative video hosting server should be available. I'm moving this thread over to the internal blog to see if any new information can be shared. I know there was a post earlier that stated that the back up video player should launch automatically but we've never had that happen in our district. Hopefully we'll hear something! Thanks for posting.
Hello all! I recently learned that there are a few url you can whitelist that will help with the youtube issue, I'm attaching article here - https://khanacademy.zendesk.com/hc/en-us/articles/203580580-Which-sites-domains-do-I-whitelist-so-my-students-can-access-all-of-Khan-Academy-. Hope it helps!
My school is also experiencing this issue. We have youtube blocked for obvious content reasons but cannot access videos on Khan Academy.
In the browser console log, it states that:
I have also attached a screen-shot.
Is there a workaround besides unblocking youtube?
Hello @gkisling! Our school went through a similar issue last year and I found the following resource - Allow Khan Academy Videos While Keeping YouTube Blocked - that was very helpful. Hopefully it helps. Please let me know if you have any further questions, comments, or suggestions. Thank you for posting.
