Helping ELL's
I work with several English language learners each year in math class. Does anyone have any advice about using Kahn Academy with students with very limited English? Thanks!

Hi there! My name is Megan G, I am a middle school math teacher with an endorsement in ESL in Chicago. Over 80% of my students are English Learners with varying English Language proficiencies. What grade levels of math are you teaching? Could you give me a couple more specific details about your students and ELP scores? This would help is crafting a plan that would be helpful to you and your students. Thanks!
Hello @mbutler! My name is Lisa Krueger and I am a Khan Academy Ambassador teaching in Chicago. I work in a school with a high EL population and I found letting the students work in their native language on a skill first then have them work through the same skill in English helped my students learn new skills as well as retain the knowledge as they advanced. Khan Academy is available in ten different languages. A user can change their Primary language by clicking their name in the top right corner then click Settings then under Basics they select their Primary language. Hopefully this helps. Please let me know if you have any further questions, comments, or suggestions. Thank you for posting and Good Luck!
Quite a few of our students are students of SIFE, do you have any students with interrupted learning? How does this effect learning using Khan Academy?
Hello @trever.reeh! So, Khan Academy was started as a tool for users to fill in the gaps in their mathematical knowledge and allow them to expand and grow their mathematical knowledge - meaning it is designed for SIFE users! I've included a screenshot below of the missions I would recommend for your students. Please let me know if you have any further questions, comments, or suggestions. Thank you for posting.
I feel the videos would be incredibly difficult for ESL and students of SIFE just watching the video for basic addition students would have to know an incredible amount of English to be successful. The readings would offer no extra help.
With students not knowing written Spanish or the vocabulary in their native language, how do you differentiate for those students?
Hello @trever.reeh! Sorry I didn't realize that you were speaking about English language learners as well! Yes, I agree that would be difficult! Khan Academy is available in 12 different languages. To select a native language click the user name in the upper right corner and click Settings then click in the Primary language box for a drop down menu then click Save changes (see image below). Please let me know if you have any other questions, comments, or suggestions. Thank you for posting.
