Assignments by Student
We used to be able to see all recommendations for one student at a time. We can't see the same thing with assignments. I'd like to see all assignments for one student at a time, please.

Hi Elizabeth -- this is a request I've seen numerous times now, so I'm going to try to get this some attention by the coders at Khan Academy. We're doing all we can to make sure the web site suits the needs of the teachers. Thanks for helping us figure out what that means! :-)
Yes PLEASE. This is an extremely useful feature for teachers who are assigning Khan Academy HW -- otherwise it is hard to see what our students have and have not done!
I agree. When I assign multiple tasks for students as a grade, I like to be able to look at one student over multiple skills/tasks at one time. Without this feature, I will have to write each student's score down, so I can view them all at the same time - which would take a very long time compared to what Khan used to have for us.
Anything you all can do to bring that back or create something similar is much appreciated!!
Yes!! I need this so much! This might force me to switch providers. I am doing 8 different independent studies simultaneously and I can't manage all their assignments at once unless I can see them by student.
Okay, we have a solution from Khan Academy! When you view a class as a Coach, you can click on Settings on the far right, then "Download CSV":
After importing this to Excel or Google Sheets, this gives coaches the ability to sort data any way they wish -- by student, by assignment, by date, etc. You can also form a passing percentage based on the number right at the time the assignment was due or the best score the student achieved before or after the due date.
Yes, I agree with Ms. Peterson on this. Proper date sorting would make things much easier...
Replying to this to bump it up in the ratings. :)
This is crucial for secondary teachers or for teachers assigning multiple assignments.
Like seriously need asap. Preferably before my end of semester grading. ;)
I too would like to be able to sort assignments by students in order to tell which students have completed each assignment and who has not. It is not easy to figure out the work around that is currently advised.
Please, this is so important! There are parents that I have to email each week what they child owes per their IEP. Would also help when reminding students of their assignments. Also, this would be helpful if each class coach could see this too.
Ambassador Massey - YOUR POST IS NOT A FIX IT IS AN EQUALLY TEDIOUS WORKAROUND.
You still need to OPEN each assignment and append all the CSV files together. You would have to visually compare the due date to the date completed or define a field to see who was on-time.
I have over 400 students for whom I manage our summer review work. Each is doing a set of 25-40 skills over the summer. I wound up bundling them into smaller groups so that when I clicked on each assignment I could at least see them at a glance for each skill without wasting more time scrolling. (I CANNOT BEGIN TO TELL YOU HOW MANY HOURS THIS IS TAKING! I DID THIS LAST YEAR AND COULD SKIM A WHOLE CHILD'S RECOMMENDATIONS IN ONE SHOT!!!!!)
I hope that this has NOT been labeled as a fix because it is grossly inadequate.
For those we are coaching, we should AT LEAST be able to navigate to the student's profile and have the SAME VIEW of assignments as they do on their HOME SCREENS. Ideally, we need to have SOMETHING back on their progress screens so we can see exactly what they were assigned and if it has been completed BY STUDENT.
I hope Ambassador Massey has not taken this off the to do list with his reply because this is NOT FIXED.
I agree. The old system was so easy...
Agreed, Ms. Peluso. It's a workaround that helps out some of the teachers, but the Khan Academy team tells me that there are many other updates to the viewing process in the works.
I can't write any of the code and don't have a way to close an issue. I'm just helping out here where I can so the Khan team can make sure that teacher issues are being properly identified. This is definitely still on the list.
It's still a work around, but I just created a separate class for each of my students. That way when I look at the assignments for a "class" it's actually just that student's assignments and I can see exactly what they did.
Also, If you have students enter the class after an assignment is already due, the spreadsheets do not line up. I am pretty fluent in Excel and it's still super tedious work. Almost not worth it!
I bundle the students who are starting a section at the same time into one class. When the due date has passed, I look up in the activity screen to see if anyone is trying to game the system by working on a skill late. If there is later work on a skill I actually use the "report" in the assignment screen to see if it was finished on time. Remember, it will go in as complete even if late and the only way you'd know is to actually view the report. (In other words, if it says 8/8 it could really be 6 on time and 2 late.) For the other skills with no late activity, I just look it up the skill in group progress to see if it's been moved over to practiced. Since only one or two have late items, it saves a ton of time.
(BTW It's still much faster than the data export nonsense that doesn't line up. The "export" there should not be on the skill level it should be on the class assignment level by student with a date range.)
Good luck to all!
The download of the the class data is ok as a temporary work around as I can sort by student name and see which assignments of been completed, how many times, and to what level of accuracy. The thing that is driving me crazy about it (and I think would be a quick fix) is the date format. Due to the fact that the date is written Oct 12th, 9:56AM, excel recognize it as a date but as text. That means I can't sort by date order. If they formatted the date as Oct/12/2017 9:56 AM, then I think excel would recognize it as a date.
I was hoping that when the recommendations went completely away in November that perhaps they would be replaced by an assignments tab. No luck so far. The download has still not been fixed to allow for proper date sorting either. Please Kahn fix this issue.
I wholeheartedly endorse this proposal. The coach's dashboard has improved, but it still lacks important functionality that I need as a teacher to fully utilize Khan Academy. The idea suggested above would be nice, or even better, a grid view where rows are students, columns are assignments, and there can be percentages automatically calculated for both. In other words the last column would give me the average percentage earned by that student across all their assignments and the last row would give me the average score on that assignment by all my students.
Thanks!
I have certainly gotten better at excel because of this issue and I am happy with the way I can now do my grading. SO all in all, things are ok. Keeping good discipline and grouping the students by cohort is really important for me to be successful here.
I download the CSV for the whole class and might do any one of the following:
- sort by student name AND most recent attempt date to see who's working on what skills right now.
or - sort by student name AND number of attempts to float individual struggles to the top of their section of the list.
or -use "IF" commands to find performance percents on each skill (If #attempts>0 report #correct/#of questions else report a 0) to give a grades.
If I only want to work with a particular assignment set, I sort by due date or skill name and delete the items I don't want to consider before manipulating the info by student.
Having these kinds of manipulations available in program would be great.
thanks afischburg, I'm going to use one student pre class method as a workaround now to manage assignment for an individual student.
