How do I connect my class to an interim assessment?
This page walks through the end-to-end flow for implementing Khan Academy Interim Assessments during a testing window:
Adding assessments,
Connecting classes,
Unlocking/locking during class,
Learner access, and
Managing retakes.
Check out this interactive getting started demo or read on for more details.
Initial Setup
The following steps only need to be completed once at the beginning of the school year.
Navigate to Assessments
Teachers in a participating district will see "Assessments" in their left navigation.
Add Assessments
Before taking any further action, a teacher must first add assessments to their landing page.
Teachers should only add the assessments recommended by their district.
Product controls are currently at the district level, which means all teachers will see these options, even if their school is not participating, or if the district has elected only to participate in certain assessments.
Connecting Classes
Once an assessment is added, the teacher selects which of their classes to connect to it.
This is the critical step — only students in a connected classroom can access the assessment, and reports use connected classrooms to determine who's included in completion tracking.
Once teachers have successfully added assessments and connected classes, they will see a row for each class/assessment combination on their assessment landing page. The section closest to the current date will open by default.
Teachers can edit assessments and class connections using the manage button in the top right corner. Once initial setup is complete, no further action is required until the window opens.
Implementation Steps
The following steps need to be completed during each assessment window:
Unlock / Lock Assessments
Once the testing window opens, teachers will see an "Unlock" button on each row. This button controls whether students in the class can access the connected assessment.
Please note that an unlocked assessment becomes the most prominent button for llearners on their class dashboard, so teachers should only unlock an assessment when they are ready to administer it in a proctored environment.
Once an assessment is unlocked, the button will toggle to show “lock” instead. An 120-minute “auto-lock” timer automatically begins.
Important - Khan Academy Interim Assessments are not timed tests. The auto-lock timer is simply a fail safe in case teachers forget to lock the assessment.
Teachers can lock and unlock assessments as many times as they want. Only students who have not already completed the assessment will be able to access it.
